Public Presentation of the Proposal “Forests of All the Colours” for the recovery of the native forest in Bizkaia

An umbrella group of 40 ecological groups, associations and businesses from the forestry sector which has the support of more than 50 personalities from the world of culture and education, including 3 departments of the University of the Basque Country (EHU-UPV), has presented today in a press conference the “Forests of All Colours” proposal for the recovery of the native forest.

With this proposal the group requests that the Foral Government change its forestry management in favour of:

A more ecological management of public forestry lands:

  1. Which facilitates a regeneration and increase in the land size of the native forest, in such a way that it can connect small areas of disconnected forest land to create areas of a bigger size and healthier state.
  2. Which foments productive diversification, which in particular opens the door to Forestry in harmony with Nature, a forestry which has proven in other European countries that it can be developed in a way that can be profitable while working with native species, avoiding cutting trees at the base, encouraging the biodiversity and fertility of the soil. Not enough good quality wood can be found here so it has to be imported from countries with forests which are in risk of destruction.
  3. A change in the forestry grants to help private owners who would like to implement the above in their own lands.
